At Backhausen, we became conscious of the need for non-medical face masks in early March 2020, after the Covid 19 pandemic hit our home country of Austria and other parts of the world. We wanted to do something significant for our community – something that would take advantage of our expertise and craftsmanship and would benefit other people and businesses without forgetting about the environment and our planet. We decided to adapt the production facilities at our factory in Hoheneich, in the heart of the Waldviertel, in order to develop a new fabric made of 100% cotton that is sustainable and durable for non-medical grade masks for an everyday use.
We have created a mask design that provides comfort, protection and is aesthetically pleasing. The double flap in our design allows the mask to be comfortably worn with glasses. The double bands allow the mask to be adjusted, adapted and fitted for wear.
For every sold mask, €1 will be donated to the Austrian charity Lebenshilfe. This organization supports over 11,000 people with intellectual disabilities at 500 locations throughout Austria. It enables people with disabilities to decide their own development opportunities in all phases and areas of life, to shape their lives independently, choose their support freely and take advantage of social offerings confidently and in line with their own needs. Find out more about this charity and what they do on their website.
Our masks can be washed at 60° and are reusable, avoiding the need for continuous replacement.
The masks are durable and provide moisture control while meeting all sustainability criteria. The cotton yarn used is OEKO-TEX certified.
The masks can be customized by changing the colour of the bands (standard colour: white) and/or the colour of the fabric. A logo can be added through weaving or embroidery.
The masks can be worn comfortably for longer periods of time (i.e. working shifts) without causing discomfort from prolonged wear.
Our design team has developed a mask design that is aesthetically pleasing, making it ideal for service and retail settings, while being protective.
From 13th May 2020, our non-medical grade masks will be available for purchase at our Design Shop in Hoheneich.
